Texas Holdem Poker : Semi-Bluffing and Defensive Betting

Seems like most people are always talking about pre-flop strategy, so I wanted to talk a little bit about how I play after the flop. Maybe I can help others, or maybe they have advice to improve my play.

I think that two of the most important plays after the flop are the semi-bluff and the defensive bet. That is because these are the plays you make when you havent hit a hand but you have a good drawing hand. Its easy to play a hand when you flop a monster. But I think that these two are the best ways to play a drawing. Each one is played depending on you opponent(s) and your position. So heres how I play it, so tell me what you think.

Early Position – Tight Opponents:

A semi-bluff works fairly well in this position. Come out betting and if a tight player didnt hit a hand hell probably lay down, and if hes unsure you may get a call. But watch out, if that tight player comes back over the top it may be time to get away.

Early Position – Loose Opponents

This is were I like to do a defensive bet. Decide how many chips you are willing to risk on your draw and bet. This is usually a much smaller bet than normal. Its been my experience that the loose player will usually just call a bet rather than re-raise. However, if you check to them, theyre more likely to throw in more chips than your willing to pay.

Late Position – Tight Opponents

This is the best time to do a semi-bluff, especially if most of the table checks. If thats the case youll probably pick up the pot now. If a player before has bet, you have to decide if he has a hand or not. If not, then reraise and hell probably go away since he was trying to steal the pot. If you think he does, well then its time to calculate your odds, and decide if the pot odds are worth the call.

Late Position – Loose Opponents

This one is a bit tricky, because its harder to put a loose player on a hand. And if your in late position against loose player, chances are they have already bet. This is were I usually decide to take a chance and come back over the top of them and hope they dont call, and if they do, well then its time to gamble. Chances are though even a loose player will go away if you come back strong enough.

Remeber though that these are moves I only make after the flop comes and I have a decent drawing hand (usually not a gutshot either). Maybe four to the flush or the open ended straight, for example.

Gaming/Gambling Big Business or Big Hoax

Gaming and Casino gambling is the ultmate big business….no more illegal mobster dealings. They have all cleaned up their acts and incorporated themselves. They are a legitimate business now. Casino gambling has been the big rage for an entire century and it shows no sign of slowing down. As with many activities that man is involved with there are many facets to gambling. In Texas, if you buy one of their scratch-offs, you are helping to educate the school children in that state. When the legislators decided to legalize that form of gambling in the state, you see casinos are a no-no in Texas, the public was led to believe that a majority of the funds would go toward education. This did not prove to be the case. The students might net a measely twenty percent. However, big money is being made from scratch-offs. Who are the losers? What are your chances of winning from scratch-offs? It’s unbelievable odds.

Yet, underpriviledged, sometimes undereducated, individuals seem to spend a disproportionate amount of money on scrath-offs. Vegas is bigger and better than ever. Yes it controlled by the people once called the Mafia. The money left at the gaming tables and in the slot machines on any single day could rebuild New Orleans. More than 65 million peole participated in this sport yes, consider it a sport, last year here in America. Around the world there were Canadians, Mexicans, and just about every nations’ citizens participating in some form of gambling. People with money and people without money are making gaming/gambling a mega business.

From kitchen poker games to ball games of all kinds, and horse betting and dog betting to dominoes more people participate in gambling than in any other sport. The biggest draw in the world of gambling is casino gambling. Everybody dreams of winning the mega bucks. The casinos will allow a lucky player to win big money sporadically. The newspaper headlines spread the news “Ten Million Dollar Jackpot won on Dollar Machine.” Just the headlines suckers need to see. They will keep coming …knowing that the machines are programmed, but feeling so lucky that they know that they will be the next big winner. By the time one realizes that this is not his lucky day, he has spent the mortgage, the grocery money and has forgotten about the baby’s milk. Who’s the loser?

Texas Hold’em Online Tournament – How To Deal With The Extreme Swings

Texas Hold’em Online has more swings then any other game.

Because you are playing online you are seeing three times as many hands then you would see in person.

You can go from being up several hundred or even thousand to in hours, sometimes minutes.

You really have to be careful how you play this game online. Always keep track with an on-going log of your bankroll.

I personally like to know down to the penny how much I have deposited/withdrawled in the last couple of days.

I recommend to my students to set a daily/weekly/and monthly budget for poker.
If you do not set a budget and a goal, you will not succeed in this game.
It is a game of huge swings.

When I won my first tournament, I cashed for about $3900.

I was on such what I call a “poker high” I joined EVERY tournament
The buy-ins ranged from $50 all the way up to $215

Needless to say, I lost most of that money back within two weeks.

Why?

I did not take the time to sit down to see how much money I need to take out or ANYTHING, I just GAMBLED.

This is not HEALTHY. You need to look at poker as a business.

Is it good business to put all your eggs in one basket?

No! The most successful investors are the ones who took calculated risks, but also diversified themselves.

Keep that thought in perspective before you look at your balance as $109 and decide to put it all on one tournament.

Until next time, Good luck at the tables!

Texas Holdem Strategy -Adapting Your Game In Texas Hold’em – How To Outplay Your Opponents To Victor

In this article I will focus on texas holdem strategy, specifically how to adjust your play.

When playing Texas Holdem, whether it be tournament style or cash game you have to REALIZE that your game needs to be able to adapt.

What do I mean by this?

There are four types of players in Texas Hold’em:

Loose-passive

Loose-aggressive

Tight-passive

Tight-aggressive

Loose-passive players are the players that tend to be involved in MANY pots. They will call with just about any two cards and will chase any flush or straight. They came to gamble and dont mind going home early. They will either be out quickly or accumulate chips by getting lucky.

Tight-passive- these players are waiting for premium hands. they are tight but when the time is right they will play against you.

Loose-aggressive players – These players will drive you insane. They will play any hand no matter what. They basically play any hand they have like its aces. Unless you have a GREAT starting hand it is just best to stay out of their way.

Tight-aggressive – probably the most common player in Hold’em. This type of player is TIGHT but AGGRESSIVE when they know they have the best hand. They are smart and cunning players.

As you can see, these different types of players can present many different situations for a player. You must be able to correctly read what type of players are at your table and bet your hands accordingly.

How should you be playing?
It’s really up to you. If you are playing poker seriously and want to win consistently you should have somewhat of a TIGHT game. If you are trying to WIN and don’t care about losing then you should probably be a loose-passive player.

It all depends on you and what you are trying to get out the game.

Until next time, good luck at the tables!
